Holocaust Memorial Committee Commemorates 70th Anniversary of D-Day

The Holocaust Memorial Committee and several Survivor Organizations gathered on a recent Sunday at the Holocaust Memorial Park at Sheepshead Bay to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the Allies’ ground operations - which ultimately led to the liberation of the Concentration Camps. The program was HMC's 29th Annual Holocaust Gathering. The event began with the NYPD's Shomrim Society Color Guard, Cantor Pincas Cohen leading the anthems and Rabbi Yehoshua Zelikovitz delivering a moving and eloquent invocation.

The HMC presented and honored Holocaust survivors and World War ll veterans along with  the Manhattan Beach Children’s Choir.   Poet and author Rene David Alkalay from the former Yugoslavia, related his family history and Ivona Hertz, a third generation survivor from the former Czechoslovakia spoke of her grandmother who survived  Auschwitz. Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz presented a New York State Resolution to the HMC proclaiming Holocaust Remembrance Day. Also participating in the gathering were Councilman Chaim Deutsch, a son of survivors, Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny and Councilman Mark Treyger. At the park's central memorial, the beautiful annual candle lighting ceremony brought all generations together. Rachel Levenson, the granddaughter of Ira Bilus,Z"l , paid tribute to her late grandfather, an active community leader and the founder of the HMC and the Holocaust Memorial Park.
